Our self awareness, sense of morality, understanding of time and space as well as our ability to contemplate the meaning of life is what sets human beings apart from all other species. The ability to use our cognitive process to our advantage is what sets greatness apart from mediocrity and those that have learned to tap into the power of the mind experience a reality much different than those who have not.
A Little History…
The word hypnosis comes from the Latin root words hypno (to sleep) and osis (the process of), however, hypnosis is far from a state of sleeping. Hypnosis is better defined as a state of being that is intensely relaxing with heightened awareness, concentration and suggestibility.
Some fundamentals of hypnosis date back over 2,400 years within certain disciplines of yoga. The hypnosis that we understand today has been formalized and fine tuned over the last 200 years proving to be a valuable tool in conquering fears, improving motivation and concentration, knocking out addictions and enhancing performance as well as a host of other benefits.
According to Freud, anything that has ever been seen has also been recorded by the mind, so hypnosis has been successful with eye witnesses and suspects recalling details in high profile court cases such as Ted Bundy and the Boston Strangler. Hypnosis has been a valuable resource for athletes, such as Olympic Medalists Adam Malysz and Mary Lou Retton as well as golf legend Tiger Woods to increase their sports performance.
How Does it Work?
The way hypnosis works is a hypnotherapist guides a subject down into a state of hypnosis which distracts the conscious mind providing direct access to the subconscious mind where the real power lies. By distracting the very rational, judgmental, critical mind (which are all necessary traits to survive our day to day lives) we are given access to the space where all memories, recollections and past experiences and associations are stored. It is here that suggestions for improvement can be seeded and destructive habits or thought patterns corrected.
Step Out of Our Own Way…
Hypnosis is a great way to eliminate unwanted behavior or destructive thinking patterns as well as heighten or improve existing desirable tendencies or skills. It is also a great process to retrain our minds how to think bigger, better and in a healthier fashion. Often times, our biggest obstacle between where we are and what we want is the way we think which is often times shaped by negative experiences. “I can’t do it”, “I’m not lucky like that”, “the last time I tried that it didn’t work out”, “those things don’t happen to people like me”, “I’m not good enough”, etc.. These thoughts may be happening at a conscious or subconscious level.
Hypnosis can change that negative way of thinking!
It is important to remember that those negative thought processes can be corrected and the mind retrained to think another way… a better way. It is only because these patterns of thought have been practiced so consistently for so long that they have become so strong and part of the core belief system. It doesn’t take long before thoughts like, “there’s plenty of evidence that supports why I can do this” become dominant. The subconscious mind is a powerful asset that we all obtain and to tap into it appropriately and wisely can do us a world of good both physically and mentally.
It feels better to think better!
